About Mothering Sunday
The true name
for ‘Mothers Day’ in the UK is Mothering Sunday and was first celebrated in
Britain at the beginning of the 17th century.
During the latter part of the 20th century,
England was much influenced by the American Mother's Day and following the
Second World War the British Mothering Sunday ceremony became an annual
event. It always falls on the fourth Sunday of
Lent; however, as the dates of Lent and Easter move every year, the actual
Sunday chosen to celebrate this special day also varies from year to
year. In 2009 we celebrate Mothering Sunday on the 22nd March 2009.
In Victorian times,
it was traditionally the day when the children - mainly daughters, who had
gone to work as domestic servants, were given a day off to visit their
mother and family. Today it is traditionally a day when children of all
ages, male and female, give treats, presents, flowers and cards to their
mothers. Taking mum out for a special lunch on this day has become one of
the UK’s most popular celebrations of mothering Sunday.
For
the fact seekers this Sunday in the UK is also known as Mid-lent Sunday,
Rose Sunday and Laetare Sunday. Above all, Mothering Sunday should be a a
relaxing, carefree day. What better than booking a special lunch at Stock
Hill Country House Hotel.
